Abstrakt

This paper describes a facility that has been built to perform ion backscattering experiments on solids at an angle of 180 degree between incoming and outgoing projectiles. Investigation of the projectiles scattered at nearly 180 degree has several advantages. As a test of the facility the enhancement was measured in the 180 degree yield of 400 keV protons backscattered from polycrystalline tungsten. It is shown that by replacing the circular diaphragm by a slit it becomes possible to change the effective backscattering angle continuously near 180 degree .
